You cannot swipe to delete photos in the iPhone's Photos app. In the photo viewer, swiping up opens the info panel and swiping down closes it; deleting is done with the trash button. The quickest built-in way to remove many photos is Select: tap Select, tap the shots you do not want, then tap the trash button. If you want a swipe-to-decide flow, you need an app that shows photos one at a time and lets you swipe to keep or delete each one. PhotoGO AI works this way, month by month. Whatever you use, deleted photos go to Recently Deleted for 30 days, so empty that album to get the space back.
The steps below are for iOS 27. Where iOS 26 or earlier differs, we say so.
What swiping does in Photos
Open a photo and swipe up, or tap the Info button: Photos shows the photo's details, including its file size, and swiping down closes them. Nothing in this gesture deletes the photo. To delete one photo, tap the trash button at the bottom right of the viewer and confirm.
The fastest built-in way: Select
- Open Photos > Library and tap Select at the top right.
- Tap each photo you want to remove. The bar at the bottom shows how many are selected.
- Tap the trash button at the bottom right and confirm.
This is faster than deleting one photo at a time, but it asks you to judge from small thumbnails. It works best for obvious clutter, such as a run of screenshots, and less well when you have to compare near-identical shots.
What swipe-style apps add
A swipe-style cleaner shows one photo per screen and turns each decision into a single gesture, so you can get through a large library without hunting for thumbnails.
In PhotoGO AI, the month-by-month view lets you walk your library through time and swipe to keep or clear. Swipe left to keep a photo and swipe up to delete it; as you drag, the card shows KEEP or TRASH. Duplicates, screenshots, blurry photos and large videos have their own sections, and sorting a category starts with your newest photos and goes all the way to the end.
Disclosure: PhotoGO AI is our app. Everything you delete goes through iOS and lands in Recently Deleted, exactly like deletions you make in Photos. Scanning and sorting are free. The number of free deletions is limited, and PhotoGO Pro unlocks unlimited cleanups.
Tips for swiping through a big library
- Go one month at a time. A short stretch of time is easier to judge than the whole library, and you can stop at any point.
- Start with the easy wins. Screenshots and obvious duplicates take seconds per decision.
- Empty Recently Deleted when you finish. Deleted photos keep taking space until you delete them from that album or 30 days pass. Our guide to iPhone storage that stays full after deleting photos covers the steps.
You can clean a whole library without any swipe app. A swipe app changes how fast each decision feels, not what is possible.
